The traveling volleyball life continues. Lee Da-young (27) is headed to France this time.
The French league’s Voléo Le Canet team 안전놀이터 announced on Tuesday (July 10) that “Voléo Le Canet has signed a new setter, Lee Da-young.” “All of her experience will help the team,” the team said.
“All the experience of Korean setter Lee Da-young will be beneficial to the club. We welcome her and wish her success,” said the club.
The 5-foot-9 setter made her professional debut in the 2014-2015 season when she was selected by Hyundai E&C Hillstate with the second overall pick in the first round of the Korean Volleyball Organization (KOVO) Women’s Draft. Her twin sister, Lee Jae-young, was selected in the first round by the Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders, and the twins became stars in the professional ranks. Lee became a free agent after the 2019-2020 season and moved to Heungkuk Life, where she was joined by Lee Jae-young and generated a lot of buzz.
However, Lee was mired in controversy in February 2021 when she and Lee Jae-young were named as perpetrators of school violence. Their team, Heungkuk Life, suspended them indefinitely, and the Korean Volleyball Association banned them from the national team indefinitely.
Eventually, the twins turned their attention to the Greek league, signing with PAOK Thessaloniki of the A1 League to start fresh. While Lee injured her back during the 2021-2022 season and had to return home, Lee established herself as the starting setter at PAOK, which led to her playing for Rapid Bucharest in the Romanian Women’s Professional Volleyball League in the 2022-2023 season.
Realistically, Lee is unlikely to return to Korea, so her best bet is to continue playing overseas. This time, it’s France. Lee has signed with French league side Bolero Le Canet for the upcoming 2023-2024 season.
The team finished the 2022-2023 season in sixth place with 16 wins and 10 losses (49 points), but made it to the championship game in the playoffs, where they defeated regular-season champions Mulhouse in two games to win the title.
