Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bae Ji-hwan Bae hits a pitcher in the face. The pitcher goes down, and Bae is left shaken up.
Pittsburgh lost 5-7 at home to the New York Yankees in the 2023 Major League Baseball World Series at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, on April 16.
Starting at second base and batting first on the day, Bae Ji-hwan went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored, breaking his 4-for-4 silence against Washington the day before (Nov. 15).메이저놀이터
However, the game came down to the wire for Pittsburgh. Bae made a throwing error in the ninth inning that cost the Pirates the game. The play could have been saved by a double play, but Bae’s throw to first base was a difficult boundary. The first baseman couldn’t catch it, and the game was tied.
Bae also had a “nightmare” at the plate. He drew a walk in his first at-bat in the top of the first inning, and after Leover Figueroa singled to left in the top of the second, he hit a grounder in front of the third baseman on a hit-and-run play. Bae was out, but the lead runner advanced to second. Reynolds followed with a single to right to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with the score tied at 2-3, Bae reached on an infield single with runners on first and second. The ball hit the Yankees’ second pitcher, left-hander Anthony Mizevich, in the face.

“He was hit by Bae’s 100.6 mph (161.9 km/h) fastball and fell to the ground,” MLB.com reported. Bae’s pitch knocked him to the ground. After running to first base, Bae looked at him with concern.
After the game, Bae said, “I saw the ball go over there. I was a little shocked,” he said, “I felt really sorry for him. It was an accident. There’s nothing we can do about it. We can only pray,” he said.
MLB.com reported, “Yankees medical staff rushed to his aid. Minutes later, the pitcher was being examined with a towel applied to stop further bleeding. Bae was visibly shaken.”
