A teenage prospect for Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs is being sought by police as a suspect in a shooting.
The online edition of Sports Illustrated (SI) reported on Friday (Nov. 25) that police in Santiago, Dominican Republic, are looking for Cubs prospect Josefreilin Alcantara, who was involved in the shooting death of a 26-year-old man.
SI cited Nathaniel Perez Nero, a reporter for 메이저놀이터 local newspaper Diario Libre, for an overview of the case and its progress.
According to him, the shooting occurred last Friday. The victim, Darwin Diaz Valero, reportedly owed Alcantara about US$2,750. The creditor, 18-year-old Alcantara, reportedly argued with Diaz inside a gray Hyundai Sonata, during which he fired two shots at Diaz.
Authorities impounded the vehicle, which is in storage, and found blood and a 9mm bullet inside.
Alcantara reportedly fled after being treated at a hospital. His cousin, who was with him at the scene, has already been arrested.
Alcantara signed a $500,000 entry-level contract with the Cubs in January 2022. It was the fourth-largest contract among the 30 international prospects signed by the Cubs last year.
